Mother's Day at OGA

In celebration of Mother's Day, we're offering a special treat for all the incredible moms out there! On Mother's Day, May 12th, moms can enjoy 50% off green fees as our way of saying thank you for all that they do. My mother always tells me she's proud of me... However, she's never seen me swing a golf club or watched me 4-putt. Bring Mom out for a round of golf. It's our small gesture of appreciation for the extraordinary women in our lives.

Memorial MEDLEY TOURNAMENT 2024

Update on Course Conditions

For those of you who visited us this winter, thank you for your patience as we took on the massive project of replacing our entire irrigation system. I am pleased to report that the project is complete and the course has recovered quite well in a short time. We are thrilled to have this project completed and look forward to seeing improved conditions in 2024 and beyond.

Our Grounds Crew completed their Spring Aeration at the end of March. The putting surfaces have recovered well and the course is in great shape as we turn the page to May. As our start times continue to get earlier with daylight throughout the summer, please be patient with our Grounds Crew as they complete their work in the AM if you are a dew-sweeper type. We have some ongoing projects on course we will continue to prioritize to ensure course conditions remain top-notch throughout the summer ahead.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

These kids are going to learn the fundamentals of the swing, rules and etiquette of golf. The format for PGA Junior League is a scramble match play, which is a blast for the kids. They are going to come out here and create new friendships, learn how to play as a team, and have fun playing golf!

Tip of May

Course Management or Course Navigation. Is an easy way to shave a few strokes off your score. Let’s think of your favorite golf hole. What are the features of the hole? Does it have fairway bunkers? Green Side Bunkers? Narrow Fairways? Tree lined? Those features are the holes natural defense. Your job is to find the holes in the defense. An example to prevent yourself from hitting into those areas are questions like this. “Do I have enough club to carry that fairway bunker on your normal swing AND your miss hit? If the answer is no, then you need to pick a club that absolutely will not get to that bunker. We know from years of golf tracking systems that your stroke average goes up quite a bit by hitting into that fairway bunker or the trees. By picking a few better shots, we can shave few strokes off our rounds.

Superintendent's Update

Happy May! It’s time for the flowers to start blooming and gardening time.

We are busy trying to get ahead of this early, weird Spring. Is it warm, is it cold, why do we still have frost? The nice thing is that it has been dry. We can get out there and mow all the rough, and keep it mowed. The greens are healed up nicely, and the verticut and top-dress we did the last week of April should make them even better. We will also be at our summer height for the greens to begin the month. The bad thing is the weeds are out of control. So, we will try to have a guy out there spraying every day of the week.

We will be applying our grub control soon around the greens and the edges of the fairways where we have had issues in the past. We will also be applying fertilizer and crabgrass control the middle of this month. It is also time to apply Fairy Ring control to the greens and to begin our wetting agent program. I hope to improve the consistency of the wetting agents this year to aide in the firmness of the greens.

The greens and tees have been getting some water, but I think it is time to test the rest of the system. We have had a few issues and are expecting more to pop up. So, you may encounter some wet areas of the course, along with some washed out bunkers. This is caused by the sprinklers getting stuck on from debris that may be in the lines. We will shut them off as soon as we see them, but they usually have been on all night. I hope the more we run water, the better it will get.

Let the season begin. Here’s to good weather and happy golf.

Cheers!

Dan
