The Up and Down - February 2025

General Manager's Update

We’re off to a fantastic start in 2025! January brought us some surprisingly mild and sunny days, giving golfers an early taste of spring golf. It’s been great to see so many of you out on the course, shaking off the winter rust and getting a head start on the season. If this weather is any sign of what’s to come, we’re in for a spectacular year of golf!

The 2025 Golf Season is Around the Corner!
With longer days and warmer temps on the horizon, now’s the perfect time to start planning your golf season. Whether you’re looking to lower your handicap, play in some fun events, or just enjoy a few rounds with friends, we have something for everyone this year. Be on the lookout for upcoming tournament announcements, our multi-round passes going on sale, or visit us at the Portland Golf Show February 28 - March 2nd! Once again this year we will be running a PDX Golf Show Special in our online store during the dates of the show... Whether you can make it to the show or not, make sure to shop the special online for a sweet deal on some spring golf!

Introducing Our New Corporate Partnership Program
We’re excited to roll out our new Corporate Partnership Program, designed to help local businesses connect with our golfing community. This program offers companies a unique way to market their brand through GPS advertising and though OGAGC online channels—all while supporting the game we love. Each tier of partnership includes rounds of golf at OGAGC and can be customized to fit your needs! If your business (or a company you know) is interested in learning more, reach out to me to learn more!

Our Spring Aeration is currently scheduled for March 24-26. We have a fairly extensive cart path repair project scheduled for this spring as well. Our team will continue to address issues on the golf course and we look forward to giving you a great golfing experience this year. As always, we appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you on the course soon. Let’s make 2025 a great year for golf!

What a wonderful month we just had of sunshine! The golf course is in phenomenal shape! Hopefully we can continue this weather trend through February.

PGA Junior League
PGA Junior League registration is now open! We will again be offering a PGA Junior League 13U Peewee program for golfers 5-8. This program will be a 5-week program starting in June. We will continue to have our regular 10-week program for ages 9-13 (13U) and 14–17-year-olds (17U) golfers starting at the end of May. This year there will be limited spots and scholarships available. Please email me for any further information.

Lessons
Golf season is approaching quickly! We are only 28 days away from official posting season! Winter is the best time to make those swing changes. Do you have a plan to improve your game this offseason? Do you have a set of drills and exercises that you can do at home without going to the range? Do you know your carry yardages for each club? Now is the time to dial in the game!

Tournament and events
Our Tournament and events calendar is filling up fast! If you are interested in hosting your fundraiser tournament, company golf outing, your end of year OGA Member Club event, or any other event. It’s time to reach out now, to get your desired date!

Tip
Practice... We talkin’about practice man... When you practice, do you feel like you are not translating that practice to the course? This is a twofold answer, are you practicing on areas of your game that you actually need to practice? Where are you losing strokes per round? Once you figure that out, you will see where you should be spending your time. The other part is, are you spending time simulating a round, picking targets, changing clubs often, even hitting a few putts in-between swings, and slowing down. In a round of golf you hit a shot every few minutes, not 5 balls in minute. The more that we can simulate our rounds on the driving range, we learn to recreate those swings on the course.

Superintendent's Update

It’s been a little bit cold and dry lately.  But February could begin with some moisture which could turn into snow for a few days.  During these times we will be edging cart paths until we are able to access the turf without damage.

We are in the process of clearing the debris next to our sand pile between #1 and #10 tees.  We will then level as much as possible and bring in multiple loads of gravel to keep the mud away.  This will eventually become overflow parking, and maybe one day some additional storage.

Drainage is another project we are working on.  We are inspecting old drain lines now.  Some were affected by the irrigation installation, and we are making sure they are working correctly. We have found others to be logged with roots and soil due to age and the overgrowth of vegetation.  We are cutting sections out and replacing them with new pipes and gravel.

Mowing and rolling will begin again as soon as the greens thaw enough to get machinery safely on them.  We also need to get another winter fungicide app down as soon as we can.  The rain and, possibly snow, is coming, so this will help to keep the greens healthy heading into the spring and summer.

Cheers!

Food & Beverage Manager's Update

Hello everybody!

Orchards Grill’s current hours of operation are 11am-4:30pm

We have a new phone number for takeout orders.  It is 971-983-3110.  Call to place orders for orders on the golf course or to take home!

We have lots of space in the dining room for lunch gatherings right now.  Just call ahead if you have a larger group so we can make sure we have a time and space reserved for you and your guests!

Or if you are looking for more private room for a meeting away from the dining room, our conference room is available for ½ day or full day rentals.  We can provide a meeting space with lunch served right in the meeting room.  Reservations are required for conference room rentals.

Over the past couple months, we have hosted a couple of fun events in the dining room.  In November we had Bingo Night and gave away over almost a thousand dollars in prizes to the winners!  Don’t miss out when we host another one!  Also, we hosted our annual holiday dinner party in December.  Prime Rib and Salmon were served along with some delicious sides and desserts with tasty seasonal cocktails made in the bar.  Thank you to all who attended!  It was a fun night for us hosting you as well as for all the guests!

We currently have the following draft beers on tap:

  • Modelo Especial
