The Up and Down - August 2025

General Manager's Update

Hard to believe it's already August... The days seem to be flying by in what has been an incredibly busy summer for us! Between daily play and multiple tournaments and events, there simply doesn't seem to be a "quiet" day at the course this summer and it has been great! Thank you for your continued support and for trusting us to provide you a great golfing experience each time you visit.

Many exciting things have been happening this summer and we hope it has made your overall experience more enjoyable. I have talked extensively about the course improvements in the past few updates and I am really thrilled with the course conditions at this point in the summer. While we have made great strides in many areas, I also understand areas that still need attention. With the increased amount of rounds being played recently, we have noticed some of our tee boxes have been taking a bit of a beating. This is an area we have made temporary adjustments to alleviate some of the stress and we will continue to discuss long term plans to help this problem in the months ahead. As always, our maintenance crew deserves a round of applause for their hard work this summer. These guys are the guys that don't want the spotlight but certainly always deserve it. Round of applause to our Superintendent Dan Imes and his team!

The OGA has recently launched a new website, introduced a new logo, and rolled out a full rebrand for all entities! You may have noticed our new tee markers or new pin flags recently with the new OGA Golf Course logo. All course signage will soon be updated to correspond with this rebranding effort and soon you will see the old logo phased out entirely from all golf course property and equipment. The OGA Golf Course website will soon be updated as well to a fresh, clean look to better align with the new Oregon Golf Association site. We are very excited about the updated clean look and hope you are too!

PGA Junior League

It seems as if just last time I wrote to you all this thing was just getting started! We just finished our last week of PGA Junior League. We had over 115 golfers ages 5-17 join us for our program this year! This is by far the biggest league that we have ever had! We look forward to building on this league in the future.

Fall Junior League – for our 17u and older 13u golfers we are going to be starting our fall season. Which is a quick 5-week session starting in September. Golfers that want to participate need to be able to play from at least the #1 tee box and be able to play at least 6 holes. If you are interested, please let me know!

Ladies Clinic

Our traditional lady's night has been modified to be a bit more personal this year. Instead of doing everyone in one night in two sessions. I am offering four different time slots for these clinics. Each session is going to be limited to 6 ladies only.  They will be 4-weeks long covering putting, chipping, full swing, and on course. The cost is $25 per session (on course day includes 9-hole greens fee)

Session 1- Starting Tuesday August 5th at 9:00AM

Session 2- Starting Wednesday August 6th at 3:15PM

Session 3 – Starting Wednesday August 14th at 3:15PM

Session 4 Starting Wednesday August 14th at 4:30PM

Tournaments

The tournament schedule is filling up, but that does not mean that we do not have any space left! If you are trying to throw a last-minute golf tournament or event. Please reach out to me and let’s see if we can make it happen!

We have a busy month of tournaments in August! Please check the club calendar to see course availability

Lessons

The lesson tee is filling up fast lately! If you are a beginner or an advanced player, let's take your game to the next level! I am currently offering 1 and 3 lesson packages. Do you want to take lessons with a group! Let’s get those scheduled; I am offering group lesson pricing. If you are interested in golf lessons, or have any questions, feel free to reach out!

Tip

If you want to start wedging it closer, we need to build in a baseline wedge number. Hit a few balls with a numbered wedge that are about your half swing or waist to waist and see how far that ball goes. That swing is your baseline. If you want to hit it further swing a little bit longer going back and going down; if you want to hit it a little shorter swing, it back and through a little less. Once you have a baseline number for each wedge it is easier to find a swing to hit those tricky yardage numbers.

Superintendent's Update

It is here! Hot August nights are in our sites. School will begin soon, the fair season has begun, and football is upon us!

We continue to push along with our normal maintenance. Our rough mower (we only have one at the moment) is out daily. We try to mow fairways and tees three times a week. Greens are being mowed at least five times a week. Rolling is done at least 4 times a week. When the temperature is 90 or above, we only roll greens to reduce stress to the turf.

We began to mow #12 tee down to tee height at the end of last month. I hope to have it open by the 2nd full week of this month. It has taken a little longer than expected and it should play much better.

We have two top-dressing dates this month. We had to cancel July’s date because of the heat. We will get the first one this month and will include a double verticut and mow before we put down the sand. The second should happen if the temperature stays in the 80’s for a few days. I would also like to needle tine the greens again this month. This increases air access to the root zone of the turf, along with other benefits. It was very successful when we did it last month and has little to no effect on playability.

Have a great time at the OGA!
