The Up and Down - October 2025

General Manager's Update

Hello OGA Golfers,

As we turn the page on another great summer, I’d like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who visited, played, and supported us throughout the season. Your continued enthusiasm and love for the game make OGA truly Oregon’s Home of Amateur Golf.

Our fall aeration has been completed, and the course is already healing beautifully. This important maintenance ensures healthier turf and better playing conditions year-round. This season, our team also took a sustainable approach by reusing sone the organic material removed during aeration to expand and enhance several of our Par 3 tee boxes. This not only improves the playability and aesthetics of the course but also reflects our commitment to smart resource management and continuous improvement. Increasing the surface area of the tee boxes will allow us to better distribute wear patterns as the golf course stays busy in the summer months.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to host one of our most popular annual events — the Super Scary Tournament — Saturday, October 25th. It’s a fun, festive way to celebrate the fall season, and we can’t wait to see everyone’s costumes and creativity on display out on the course! The course will be setup to challenge your abilities and will present more tricks than treats!

Super Scary 2025

I’d also like to take a moment to recognize Dalton Welch, who has been promoted to Assistant Golf Professional. Dalton has been an integral part of our golf operations team, bringing energy, professionalism, and a genuine passion for the game during his last two years as an emplyee. He will begin pursuing his PGA Associate program this fall and will remain a key part of our team. Please join me in congratulating him on this well-deserved achievement.

As we move into the quieter months, our focus remains on maintaining and improving every aspect of the facility so that when spring arrives, OGA Golf Course is in top shape for another outstanding year of golf.

Thank you again for being part of our community — we look forward to seeing you soon at the course or in the Orchards Grill!

What a summer we had! We are officially into quarter zip season, but that means that there is plenty of time to play golf. We still have two more months of GHIN Posting season! Fall happens to be my favorite time of the year to play golf. This is also the time where I start to identify what swing changes that I am going to be working on through the off season and setting goals for the 2026 golf season.

Frost Delays

We are headed into a time of frost delays. If you see the temperature, drop below 40 degrees, it would be wise to call the pro shop to check to see if there is a frost delay. Also our best form of communication of frost delay days is email. Make sure your email is correct in our system and one that you look at.

Lessons

The off season is near; club championship season is almost over. Now is the time to come in and make those swing changes while the weather is still decent. Let’s turn our off season into a time to get better at golf! I am currently offering one and three lesson packages. Use the link below to schedule your next lesson.

Tournaments

The 2025 Super Scary Two Person Best Ball Tournament is now LIVE on the OGA Golf Course Website. This tournament usually fills up fast; make sure you get your partner and get in now. There are prizes for both Gross and Net winners, optional skins games and prizes for best costume! This tournament is always a blast and gives our superintendent a chance to get revenge!

As our 2025 event calendar is starting to wind down. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about and planning your next charity fundraiser events and company outings. Planning an event can be difficult! We’re here to help make the process easy on you. From the moment you begin coordination of your golf outing until the final trophy is handed out and the last guest departs; our event staff is here to serve you. Please reach out to me or fill out an outing information request form.

Pro Tip

Did you know that almost 87% of birdies on the PGA Tour are made from inside 150 yards? It is time to set the 7 Iron down and get the wedges out at the range. My recommendation is to build a baseline half swing yardage with all of your wedges. From there you can adjust to hit it longer or shorter. This is going to take the pressure off those in-between yardages and give you more confidence hitting into the green.

Superintendent's Update

We made it through greens, tees, approaches, and fairway aerification at the end of last month. Greens, tees and approaches are completely done, and we are going to sand the fairways and some of the rough in the upcoming weeks. Please be patient while this goes on as they will be messy. We will be cleaning them up as soon as we can. Healing on the greens will only go as fast as the weather allows. Let’s hope for our soil temps to stay warm enough for this to happen, and some sun.

Leaf season is coming up so we will be spending a lot of time keeping up with them this month. Bunker drains will also be installed this month to help keep water to a minimum in them.

We have been dumping our cores by a tee on #8 and #6 in hopes of enlarging these troubled tees. We will also be adding sand to finish it out as we did not collect as many cores as we had hoped. I would like to get these areas graded and seeded as soon as possible.

As the season ends, it is time to think about upcoming projects for the upcoming months. My assistant and I will be brainstorming things to accomplish this offseason. It is also time to get some of the areas that took a beating this summer a little more attention. I will also be preparing for next year by ordering most of my chemicals early to save money. This gives us a chance to reflect on what worked, didn’t work, or some things we may want to tweak a little bit.

Happy Halloween!!!
