The Up and Down - July 2023

General Manager's Update

It is amazing to think that we are already to July but yet here we are! 2023 is more than halfway over and the days are getting shorter again. There has been a lot going on recently at the course and the weather thus far has been great for golfing! Our PGA Junior League kicked off in June with over 70 kids (ages 7-17) participating and learning to love the game of golf! Our Ladies Clinics kicked off at the end of June with 20+ Ladies taking the plunge to become better players.

In addition, as some of you may have noticed, the area surrounding the golf course is changing a bit as well. In May, construction began on a plot of land to be developed for future home sites. Construction has been consistent but has not affected play on the golf course thankfully. Despite this small disruption, the course is in fantastic shape and the putting greens are rolling fast and true!

On Wednesday, June 21st we hosted our 2nd Annual Give Back Scramble Tournament. This tournament was conceptualized in 2022 and a fundraiser event to benefit Junior Golf Programs in Woodburn! Organized by the Players Club and Ladies Club at OGAGC, the 2023 tournament was a full 120 player field that raised over $6,500 in total! Groups were paired with Local Junior Golfers to spend a FUN afternoon on the course. All proceeds were split amongst Woodburn HS Boys & Girls Golf Teams, Junior Golf Programs at OGAGC, and Oregon Junior Golf. We owe a big thank you to Rick and Catthy Eide for their contributions in making this event a smashing success! Rick and Catthy donated a great deal of their time to solicit local businesses for hole sponsorships, in-kind donations, and any support they were able to provide. Thank you to all who helped make this event happen and we look forward to making it even better in 2024!

Wishing everyone a safe and happy 4th of July!

Tip Tuesdays – Be on the lookout for OGA Golf Course Facebook and Instagram pages for swing tips, course management, and OGA Course strategies. Our first Tip Tuesday will be dropping Tuesday, July 11.

Tip – Who has the lowest score in the history of the PGA Tour? The answer is Jim Furyk who shot a 58 at the Travelers Championship in 2016. Who is the hottest player in the world right now? In my opinion it's Scottie Scheffler, he hasn’t finished outside of the top 12 since October. Now I mention these two players because of their unorthodox swing. What I love about both of these guys is how they own their swings. We don’t play golf swing, we play golf. The goal in golf is to get the ball in the cup as fast as you can. Own your swing. Swing Confidently. Problem Solve. Avoid double bogey or worse. Start to shoot lower scores.

Lessons – Are you struggling with putting? Chipping? Your 6-iron? Your 3-Wood? Your Driver? I love to attack the part of your game that you're struggling with the most. With that said, the lesson tee is starting to fill up for the summer. I am offering 1, 3, and 5 lesson packages. Sign up today!

Ladies' night – Ladies night started last week, and we had a great group of ladies out here working on putting. There is still more room to sign up at both the 3:30 and 5:00 PM clinics for individual nights. Sign up for Ladies Clinics

PGA Junior League – Our PGA Junior league is already halfway over! These young golfers are doing a fantastic job. In PGA Junior League we play a two-person, scramble match play and we are two weeks into our round robin tournament. The kids have been having an awesome time out on the course, getting better each week! We all could take a few notes on how much fun they have even if the pace of play is slow.

Golf Shop Manager's Update

I hope everyone is staying cool and hydrated but also having the best summer fun!

The golf course is staying very busy if you have been in lately. Monday and Tuesdays are the best days to come if you’re looking for a little less of a crowd.

The golf shop is fully stocked with all your needs so come take a look. Rangefinders will be going on sale this month and I will probably be throwing a few more things in there to spice it up!

We will have some fun cool things come out this month so if you aren’t following us on Facebook and Instagram go look for OGA Golf Course and give us a follow to be able to see deals, giveaways, tips from the pro and more!

As always, I hope to see you all soon!

Superintendent's Update

It is time for summer to begin. It’s amazing how much watering we have had to do up to this point, and it is just going to increase.

We are in full water mode with the hand watering of tees and greens every day. We will be cutting back on rough mowing as the turf took a hit with our rough mowers. They are in bad shape and the quality was not up to par. We are trying to fix them to mow what is needed until we get our new ones the middle of July.

We will try to needle tine (vent) the greens as soon as we get the machines ready. This will help oxygen movement within the soil. It looks like we have only one topdressing day this month. If the weather is on the cooler side, we will hopefully get in another verticut on that day.

Please be patient when the temperatures are above 90. We will most likely be out cooling the greens off in the early afternoon. This only takes a few minutes a green and should not interfere much with your round. We run the heads for around three minutes.

Happy Summer and have a safe 4th.

Cheers!
